Assessment of Protective Capacities of Kin
Research clearly tells us that when we can engage kin in all aspects of supporting birth families, child outcomes are improved. There are several issues that impact the frequency and quality of kinship care. One issue is a value issue--that workers may not believe that kin are best for children. A secondary issue is that there are times when kin may not believe that their relatives could actually harm their children. So how do we improve use of kinship care?
One way is to have specific tools and processes in place to encourage the consideration of kin and to assess the protective capacities of kin. This consultation opportunity provides time to discuss value issues and provides specific tools to assess the protective capacities of the kin--who may be serving as caregivers, visitation supports, and/or assistance to the family as part of an in-home safety plan. |
